Letter to Editor Of C.I News – ‘Get these people out into the community’

Dear Editor,

Recently, I visited Rarotonga from November 18-23 to support a staff member and two of our residents from Auckland. We visited the Creative Centre in Tupapa and were welcomed by Roger, staff and the adults with special abilities.

Meitaki maata to you all for having us over the past few days. Moana (staff), Paul and Vesna enjoyed the whole experience, especially the Wednesday programme of cultural performances. Our group was amazed by the products that the participants at the centre make and sell.

The staff members there are incredible and do a fantastic job of supporting the adults attending the programmes each day. I hope that the Ministry of Education will provide vital funding to keep the programmes in place.

Sadly, I’ve been told that our wider community in Rarotonga don’t seem to be connected with these participants apart from their families. Come on kotou, get these participants out in the community and get them connected within your workplace, sport and church environment if you have the patience and time. The community can certainly do more to get them involved.

Thanks once again to Roger and the team. Hope to see you all at next year’s Diwali festival.
